A Life Well Lived: Joseph A. Ferrara, 1936-2023
The borough of Queens, New York lost a towering figure this month with the passing of Joseph A. Ferrara on August 5, 2023. Joe lived life to the fullest for 87 years, leaving behind a legacy of family, faith, business success and community service.'
Early Life and Family
Joe was born in Brooklyn on July 28, 1936 to Rose and Jerry “Pop” Ferrara. The eldest of five sons, Joe graduated from the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School before honorably serving his country in the U.S. Army at the White Sands Missile Proving Grounds in New Mexico.
After the military, Joe started JVJ Construction with his father and brother Vincent. In 1969, Joe and all four brothers founded the highly successful Ferrara Bros. Building Materials Corp. Joe led Ferrara Bros. for decades, growing it into one of the largest concrete suppliers in New York City.
Joe was happily married for 52 years to his beloved wife Joan, who preceded him in death in 2009. He is survived by their three sons Joseph J., Perry V., and Jeffrey and daughters-in-law Vicki, Cathy, and Alison. Joe and Joan had 8 grandchildren: Anthony, Joseph N., Alexandra, James, Gianni, Catherine, John Jay, and Michael.
Business Success
Under Joe’s leadership, Ferrara Bros. concrete supplied major NYC projects like the Second Avenue Subway, Citi Field baseball stadium, and the new LaGuardia Airport.
Joe was legendary in the NYC construction world, earning immense respect from employees, customers, vendors and competitors alike. The Ferrara Bros. employees, many spanning two generations, took immense pride in being part of the Ferrara family.

Community Service
Joe deeply believed in supporting his community. He generously volunteered his time, advice, and service to many charitable causes over several decades.
