He was to a Jewish family, his father Seymour Blankfein was a clerk with the U.S. Postal Service Manhattan branch. He worked as a concession vendor at Yankee Stadium as a small boy. He attended  Thomas Jefferson High School and also received his primary education in New York City public school. He graduated valedictorian in 1971, at Thomas Jefferson High School. He later attended Havard College where he graduated in 1975 with an A.B. in history.

He went on and attended to Havard Law School where he earned a J.D. degree in 1978. He worked for the law firms Proskauer Rose and then Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine. He joined commodities trading firm J. Aron & Co. in 1982, where he served as a precious metals salesman in its London based office. The firm was later acquired by the investment bank, Goldman Sachs.

From 1994 to 1997, he was tasked by Henry Paulson with managing or co-managing the company’s currency and commodities divisions. He was later identified by Paulson as his heir after Paulson consolidated control of Goldman.

He was promoted in 2004, to the president and chief operating officer, a position he served until June 2006. In July 2006, he was asked to serve as the chairman and chief executive officer after Paulson was sworn in to serve as the 74th United States Secretary of the Treasury.
