Who is Lamman Rucker?

Lamman Rucker is an American actor, who is perhaps best known for starring as Jacob Greenleaf in the TV drama series “Greenleaf”. Additionally, he is widely recognized for appearing in movies such as “Why Did I Get Married?” (2007) and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” (2010) as well as in the TV series “Meet the Browns”.

Childhood, Family and Education

Lamman was born under the zodiac sign of Libra on the 6th October 1971, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the eldest of three children of Nana Malaya and Eric Rucker. He is of American nationality with some Barbadian ancestry, so of African-American ethnicity.

His father is a former US Navy member and a drummer, while his mother is a poet who owned and operated the Pittsburgh Black Theater Dance Ensemble. He grew up alongside a younger sister and a younger brother named Chanu Rucker, who was murdered in gun violence on the streets of their home town in 1992, at the age of 19.

After his parents divorced, Lamman moved with his mother to Washington D.C. where he completed his secondary education by matriculating from Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

He then returned to Pittsburgh to continue his education, and enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University from which he earned his undergraduate degree, majoring in Business and Information Technology, before attending Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit from which he graduated with a degree in Curriculum Development and Education. In May 2019 Lamman received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from LeMoyne-Owen College.

Acting Career

Interested in acting since his early childhood, Rucker made his acting debut in the 4th grade when he portrayed the title role in his school’s “Martin Luther King” production, after which he continued to hone his acting skills through its drama club ’til 7th grade.

However, Lamman’s ‘real’ acting debut occurred almost two decades later, when in 1998 he appeared in an episode of the television romantic drama series “The Young and the Restless”, which was subsequently followed by a streak of appearances in the Golden Globe-nominated biographical drama series about the music sensation of the 1970s – “The Temptations”.

To greater prominence Rucker came in 2002, when he landed the recurring role of T. Marshall Travers in the CBS’ soap opera serial “As the World Turns”, after which he made his debut big screen appearance in the 2003 comedy movie “Making Revolution”. With his popularity on the rise, in the course of the next couple of years Lamman made several notable appearances in TV series such as “All of Us”, “Law & Order” and “All My Children”.

Between 2005 and 2006 he starred as Chase in the TV comedy series “Half & Half”, before being cast for one of the most notable appearances in his so far acting career – the role of Sheriff Troy in the 2007 comedy drama film “Why Did I Get Married?”, which he successfully reprised in its sequel movie in 2010, entitled “Why Did I Get Married Too?”.

In 2008 he appeared in two critically booed movies – “Meet the Browns” and “Ball Don’t Lie” – before landing the main male role of Trent Major in the 2009 romantic film “The Greatest Song”.

Between 2009 and 2011 Rucker appeared in the recurring role of Dr. Will Brown in the television adaptation of “Meet the Browns”, in which he starred in a total of nearly 80 episodes through the show’s five seasons. In 2010, Lamman starred in the based-on-a-true-story stage play “Black Angels Over Tuskegee” at the D.C. Black Theatre Festival, before appearing in a series of supporting roles in films, including “The Undershepherd” (2012), “Black Coffee” (2014) and “Computer Love” (2014) before being cast for the leading role in the 2015 crime thriller film “The Man in 3B”.

Later in 2015, Rucker landed the recurring role of Elijah Bledsoe in the television fantasy horror series “South of Hell”, after which he starred in the 2016 historic drama movie “Service to Man”. The real breakthrough in Lamman’s professional career occurred later that year, when he was cast for probably his most memorable on-camera engagement so far – the role of Jacob Greenleaf in the Oprah Winfrey Network’s television drama series “Greenleaf”, in which he’s continued to star.

The story follows the Greenleafs’ unscrupulous world of lies, scandals and secrets, orchestrated by Bishop James and his wife Lady Mae Greenleaf, portrayed by Keith David and Lynn Whitfield respectively, and has so far produced 52 episodes through the four-season-run. Some of Lamman’s most recent on-camera appearances include 2018 movies such as “Sinners Wanted”, “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “Falling in Love Again”.
