Julián Álvarez is an Argentinian professional soccer player who has represented, as a forward/winger, Club Atlético River Plate (2018-2022) in Argentina and Manchester City F.C. (2022-Present) in England. With Club Atlético River Plate, he won the Argentine Primera División (the top tier of the Argentinian soccer league system) title in 2021 and the Copa Argentina (the premier domestic knockout soccer competition in Argentina) in the 2018–19 season. The 2021 Argentine Primera División title was the club’s record-extending 37th such title. Their Copa Argentina win in the 2018-19 season had tied them (3 titles apiece) with their fierce rivals Boca Juniors as the then most successful team in the competition. Boca Juniors, however, pulled ahead in the 2019-20 season by winning their 4th title. With the club, Julián also won the Supercopa Argentina in 2019. He scored a goal in his team’s 5-0 win in the trophy decider. The trophy, established in 2012, is annually decided by a one-off match played between the champions of the Argentine Primera División and the Copa Argentina. This was Club Atlético River Plate‘s 2nd such title, making them the first team to win this trophy more than once. Their previous triumph was in 2017. With Argentina, he won the 2022 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup. This was the 3rd time that Argentina had won the tournament – after 1978 and 1986.

Julián Álvarez Facts
Julián’s youth career began in 2014 when, as a 14-year-old, he joined a local club called Atlético Calchín. In 2016, he was selected by the youth system of Club Atlético River Plate, Argentina’s most successful team in domestic competitions. He stayed in the system until 2018 when he was promoted to the club’s senior team.He was a key part of the Club Atlético River Plate squads that won the Copa Libertadores (the most prestigious club competition in South American soccer) title in 2018 and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2019. The 2018 Copa Libertadores title was the club’s 4th such after previous victories in 1986, 1996, and 2015, and made the club the then 4th most successful team in the competition’s history. The Recopa Sudamericana (founded in 1989) is annually decided via a one-off match played between the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana (the 2nd-tier club competition in South American soccer, ranking below the Copa Libertadores). Club Atlético River Plate‘s 2019 Recopa Sudamericana triumph was the club’s 3rd such trophy and made it the then 2nd-most successful club in the competition’s history. At the international level, Julián represented Argentina at the under-20 and under-23 tiers before making his senior national debut in June 2021. With Argentina, Julián won the CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol) Pre-Olympic Tournament in 2020. It was the South American soccer qualification tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (held in July and August 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Argentina had won this tournament for the 5th time and as of November 2022, was the 2nd-most successful team in the competition’s history – only behind Brazil (7 titles). In 2021, he won the Copa América, the premier men’s soccer tournament contested between national teams from South America. Played for the first time in 1916, it is the oldest continental soccer competition that is still active. The title was Argentina’s 15th such, tying them with Uruguay as the competition’s most successful team. It was also Argentina’s first major senior-level title since their triumph in the 1993 edition of the Copa América. In 2021, with 18 goals to his name, Julián was the leading goalscorer in the Argentine Primera División (the top tier of the Argentinian soccer league system). His performances were instrumental in helping Club Atlético River Plate win the Argentine Primera División title for the first time since the 2013–14 season. That year (2021), Julián also won the Trofeo de Campeones with Club Atlético River Plate. He had scored the first 2 goals in the club’s 4–0 victory in the trophy decider. This was the inaugural edition of the trophy which is decided by a one-off match played between the winners of the Argentine Primera División and the Copa de la Liga Profesional. The latter tournament was first played in 2020 and was conceived as a contingency competition after the schedule for a regular league season had been repeatedly delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he won the prestigious ‘South American Footballer of the Year’ award, presented annually, since 1971, to the best soccer player in South America over the previous calendar year. That year, Julián was also included in the ‘South American Team of the Year’. This selection has been done since 1986 by El País, an Uruguayan newspaper, based on the votes submitted by specialized sports journalists from all over South America. With Argentina, he also won the 2022 edition of the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions. The trophy is decided by a one-off match played between the winners of the Copa América and the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) European Championship (also known as the UEFA Euro), the quadrennial international men’s soccer championship of Europe. It was just the 3rd edition of the tournament after 1985 and 1993. Argentina had won the 1993 edition as well.At the 2022 edition of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, Julián scored the 2nd goal in Argentina’s 2–0 win over Poland in the teams’ last match of the group stage. The win played a vital role in Argentina’s progression to the knockout phase of the competition, particularly after the team’s shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia in the team’s opening group-stage encounter. In Argentina’s pre-quarterfinal match of the tournament, against Australia, he scored the critical 2nd goal in a 2-1 victory. In the semi-final, against 2018 finalist Croatia, he scored the 2nd and 3rd goals of Argentina’s 3-0 win. The latter was the 7th goal of his senior-level international career for Argentina and 4 of them had arrived at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The win kept Argentina’s proud tradition of never losing a FIFA World Cup semi-final match alive and propelled the country into the final of the tournament for the 6th time. The previous 5 such occasions were 1930 (runner-up), 1978 (champion), 1986 (champion), 1990 (runner-up), and 2014 (runner-up).Featured Image by Julián Álvarez / Instagram
