Donovan is happiest when swimming in the ocean or a beautiful pool. "Simply keeping yourself afloat activates the core muscles in your back and abdomen. And you have to move all of your muscles to swim," says Leigh de Chaves, a physical therapist and clinical supervisor of rehabilitation services at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Donovan enjoys fresh fruit, especially bananas, blueberries, and kiwi, for breakfast. "Beyond their tangy sweetness, blueberries offer a wealth of health benefits," says Mayo Clinic dietitian Anya Miller. "Blueberries, in particular, have about 25 different anthocyanins, whereas other berries might just have two or three."
Donovan loves avocado toast for a nutritious meal or snack. "[Avocados are] packed with good fats and fiber, which means they help you stay full longer," says Charlotte Roberts, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator with Cedars-Sinai. "They're also a great source of vitamins."
Donovan treats herself to the occasional glass of wine. "People who drink in moderation have been shown to have lower rates of LDL ('bad' cholesterol) and higher rates of HDL ('good' cholesterol)," according to Northwell Health. "Wine has also been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke."
Donovan's go-to snack is a bowl of olives, which is high in monounsaturated fat. "Fat isn't the enemy," says Devon Peart, MHSc, BASc, RD. "Some types of fat, like the fat in olives and olive oil, are actually heart healthy."
